Under the Lone Star

For a while, Texas had an advertising campaign that started and/or ended each ad with, "Texas: It's like a whole other country."

That's true. If you've been here or if you live here and come from another state, you know what I'm talking about. We are not a separate country now, but we once were. And there are times when Texans act as though we still are.

We've adapted Mexican food to our own liking and call it Tex-Mex. There's chili and there's Texas chili. There's barbeque and there's Texas barbeque.

We take pride in our monuments, such as the Alamo, that mark our independence from Mexico and the beginning of our own country.

Our state flower, the bluebonnet, is no exception. It's rare to find it growing anyplace outside Texas, yet in the spring it sprouts up wild everywhere here.

We even have our own language. But that's a whole other post.
